Spatial Design

How can an existing space be transformed into an environment that shapes the way audiences move, interact, and experience performance?

Organized by Professor Marsha Ginsberg, with the collaboration of Professor Annalisa Raho, the workshop brought students together for an evening of learning, experimentation, and hands-on making, exploring the relationship between space, visual communication, and audience experience.

The session began with a lecture and discussion on how a body interacts in space which can then be interpreted and transformed in different creative contexts, from exhibitions and installations to live performances. Through the example of current and historic practitioners, participants explored how spatial relationships, scale, circulation, and atmosphere shape an experience.

Moving from discussion to practice, students developed small-scale models placing a body in an environment. Each contributed ideas and perspectives, experimenting with spatial organization, pathways, and interaction. These explorations gradually came together into a shared, interconnected model, transforming the workshop into a collaborative exercise in spatial design.

The evening sparked conversations about how we navigate and experience space, and how design can guide movement, encourage interaction, and create meaningful connections between people, objects, and their surroundings.

More than a model, the final outcome was a collective exploration of possibilities—a reminder that designing space is also about designing experiences.
