Ramadan Recipes
More than a collection of recipes, Ramadan Recipes celebrates the rich cultural diversity in the UAE and encapsulates Mariko's personal experience with members of the Abu Dhabi community. In the span of 5 months, Mariko spoke with 10 individuals, all based in Abu Dhabi but came from seven countries including Pakistan, Bosnia, Palestine, Senegal and the UAE, and watched them as they cooked their families' classic iftar recipes. The book narrates her experience with each family in short stories, while presenting their recipes through photos and illustrations.
The book is presented in Mariko's solo capstone exhibition, where she brought the book to life. The exhibition space is divided into two areas: a dining area where visitors can sit and enjoy the book, and a kitchen area where Mariko cooked one of the recipes for the opening.
“The book seeks to teach readers about the value of food and community. It encourages people to gather in the kitchen and around the dining table with their families and friends regardless of faith.
